How do you play Archery?
Drag down to pull the string to full draw, nudge your aim to allow for the wind, then let go. The arrow flies into the target, and the closer it lands to the yellow center, the higher the score.
Your aim settles for a moment at full draw, but the longer you hold, the more your breath runs out and the sight starts to wander. Shoot while you still have breath left.
How is the target scored?
The face has ten rings, from 1 point on the outer white ring to 10 in the yellow center. The color changes every two rings, and the small circle inside the 10 is called the X.
| Color | Points |
|---|---|
| Gold | 10 and 9 (the inner X counts as 10) |
| Red | 8 and 7 |
| Blue | 6 and 5 |
| Black | 4 and 3 |
| White | 2 and 1 |
| Off the face | 0 (M for miss) |
- Line cutters score up: an arrow touching the line between two rings gets the higher score, just like real archery.
- X is a 10: it scores 10, and your X count is shown separately in the 72 arrow round.
- Target size: 50 m and 70 m use a 122 cm face, 30 m uses an 80 cm face.
How does the set system work?
It follows the Olympic recurve format: each set is three arrows, the higher total earns 2 set points, a tie gives 1 each, and the first to 6 set points wins.
- Alternating shots: archers take turns one arrow at a time, and who shoots first switches every set.
- Shoot off: if it is 5 to 5 after five sets, each archer shoots one more arrow. The higher score wins, and if the scores match, the arrow closer to the center wins.
- Solo 72 arrows: 12 ends of 6 arrows for a total out of 720. Your best is saved for each distance.
- Two players: P1 and P2 take turns on one screen in a set match.
How do you aim off for wind?
The arrow drifts the way the wind arrow at the top right points, so move your sight the opposite way. Stronger wind and longer distance both mean more drift.
The wind dial is a view from above, so up means toward the target. A tailwind blowing toward the target lifts the arrow a little and a headwind drops it a little. The flags beside the target also blow with the wind, which changes slightly with every arrow.
Tips for shooting tens
- Always reach full draw. An underdrawn arrow lacks speed and drops well below your aim.
- Release before your breath runs out. About a second after full draw your sight is steadiest, and after four seconds it starts to wobble more and more.
- Check the wind first. A 3 m/s crosswind at 70 m pushes the arrow more than two rings.
- Release in the middle of the wobble. The sight drifts in a small loop. Letting go as it passes the middle of that loop keeps your groups tight.
