How do you play Stone Axe Boy?
You play a boy in a red headband who runs right, dodges enemies and pits, and touches the goal sign at the end of each stage before his energy runs out. Like the classic arcade game Wonder Boy, you run, jump, throw stone axes and grab fruit along the way.
You start empty handed, so crack the eggs on the path to find a stone axe. Pass the checkpoint sign halfway through and you restart there if you lose a life. There are four zones, Forest, Beach, Cave and Sky, with three stages each for 12 in total, and a boss waits at the end of every zone.
What happens when the energy bar runs low?
The energy bar has 16 segments and loses one every 2 seconds. When it is empty you lose a life. Eating fruit fills it back up.
| Fruit | Energy | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | 2 segments | 50 |
| Banana | 2 segments | 100 |
| Grapes | 3 segments | 200 |
| Watermelon | 5 segments | 500 |
Touch the goal sign and every segment you have left is worth 100 bonus points. After losing a life you come back with a full bar.
What comes out of the eggs?
Crack an egg by touching it or hitting it with an axe. Inside is a stone axe, a skateboard, a fairy, a skull or a honey pot, and an egg in the same spot always holds the same thing.
| Egg item | Effect |
|---|---|
| Stone axe | Flies forward in an arc and knocks out enemies. Up to two on screen at once. If you already have one, you get 500 points. |
| Skateboard | Faster, and it takes one hit for you (you just lose the board). The catch: you cannot stop. |
| Fairy | About 8 seconds of invincibility, and enemies you touch are knocked out. |
| Skull | The bad one. Your energy drains four times faster for about 10 seconds. |
| Honey pot | Fills the energy bar all the way. |
What enemies and obstacles are there?
| Name | Behavior | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Snail | Crawls slowly toward you. | 100 |
| Frog | Hops toward the boy. | 200 |
| Bee | Flies in with a wavy path. | 200 |
| Bat | Swoops down when you get close, then back up. | 200 |
| Spider | Bobs up and down on a thread. | 200 |
| Fish | Leaps out of the water pits. | 300 |
| Rolling boulder | Starts rolling once it is on screen. Takes two axe hits. | 300 |
| Campfire | Cannot be destroyed. Jump over it. | None |
| Small rock | Trip on it and you stumble for a moment and lose 2 segments of energy. | None |
Touching an enemy or falling into a pit or water costs a life and your axe. There is an axe egg near each checkpoint, so grab it again. You earn an extra life every 20,000 points.
How do you beat the bosses?
Hit a boss on the head with your axe several times. Hits on the lower body just bounce off. The red dots above the boss show how many hits are left.
- Forest, Acorn King: hops around and lobs acorns. 6 head hits.
- Beach, Captain Crab: scuttles back and forth blowing bubbles. Jump the bubbles. 8 head hits.
- Cave, Mole Boss: jumps high and lands with a thump that shakes pebbles from the ceiling. 10 head hits.
- Sky, Thunder Puff: floats overhead dropping raindrops. Throw while jumping to reach it. 12 head hits.
Tips
- Eat every fruit you see. Energy never stops draining, and skipping one can leave you short before the next.
- Run before long jumps. Hold Shift or keep a direction held for a moment to start running, and you jump much farther.
- Control your jump height. Tap for a short hop, hold for a high jump.
- Jump over skull eggs. Not every egg is a gift, and a skull with low energy is dangerous.
- Throw at bosses from close range. Axes rise and then fall, so find the distance where they meet the head and you can land hit after hit.
Your best score and the furthest zone you reached are saved in this browser, so next time you can continue from the first stage of that zone. Music and sound can be turned off with the buttons at the top right of the game.
