How do you play Number Baseball?

You find a secret number of 3 (or 4) different digits using only strike and ball clues, in as few guesses as you can. It is the same game as Bulls and Cows, known in Korea as number baseball.

Every guess goes on the scoreboard with its clue. Rule out the numbers that do not fit the clues and the answer narrows down fast. Zero is allowed, even as the first digit.

How does Vs computer work?

You and the computer each pick a secret number and take turns guessing the other one. Whoever needs fewer guesses wins. You bat first, the computer always gets its matching turn, and if both crack it on the same turn it is a draw.

The Daily number gives everyone the same 3 digit secret each day and changes at midnight Korea time.

Tips for solving faster

  1. Open with guesses that share no digits. Trying 123, 456 and 789 quickly shows which group holds the answer.
  2. An Out is great news. Cross off all of its digits in your notes.
  3. Only guess numbers that fit every clue. Anything else wastes a turn.
  4. Move a ball to a new spot. Shifting a digit tells you where it belongs.

With perfect play the 4 digit game takes a little over 5 guesses on average, and any secret can always be found within 7. Your best records and match results are saved in this browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is Number Baseball free?

Yes. Play it free right on this page with no download or sign up, on computers, phones and tablets.

Is this the same as Bulls and Cows?

Yes. Bulls and Cows calls a strike a bull and a ball a cow, but the rules are the same. Mastermind, played with colored pegs, is a close cousin.

Can I use zero?

Yes. Zero is allowed and can even be the first digit. A number can never use the same digit twice, though.

What is the difference between 3 and 4 digits?

There are 720 possible answers with 3 digits and 5,040 with 4, so 4 digits is much harder. Start with 3 if you are new.

How do notes work?

Tap Notes or press M, then tap a digit to cross it out. Tap it again for a yellow sure mark, and once more to clear it. On a keyboard you can also hold Shift and press the digit. Crossed out digits are greyed on the scoreboard too.

How many guesses does the computer need?

On 3 digits, Normal averages about 5.3 guesses and Hard about 5.1, while Easy needs more than 6. With a bit of luck you can beat it.

What are the Daily number and challenge links?

The Daily number gives everyone the same 3 digit secret each day and changes at midnight Korea time. Share a Solo result and your friend gets a link to the very same secret number. Records stay in this browser only.
