How do you play the binary puzzle?

Fill every empty cell with 0 or 1 so that no three of the same sit in a row, each row and column holds as many 0s as 1s, and no two rows or columns are identical. The puzzle is also known as Takuzu or Binairo.

On ormgames the digits are clay pieces: a yellow sun for 1 and a sky blue moon for 0. If you prefer digits, turn on numbers with the 0/1 button. Darker cells are given at the start and cannot be changed.

What are the rules?

No three in a rowThree suns or three moons may never sit side by side, across or down
Half and halfEvery row and column has exactly as many suns as moons (four each on 8×8)
No twinsTwo full rows may not be identical, and the same goes for columns
SolutionEvery puzzle has exactly one solution, reachable by logic alone
Error marksRed rings for three in a row or too many of one kind, red dashes for identical lines

What do the sizes and levels change?

There are four sizes, 6×6, 8×8, 10×10 and 12×12, and the level sets how deep the logic goes. Each puzzle is generated fresh and only kept if a computer solver can finish it with the logic of that level, with no guessing.

Tips for solving faster

  1. Look for pairs first. Two suns side by side mean a moon on both ends.
  2. Fill the gaps. In sun, blank, sun the blank must be a moon.
  3. Count. Once a row has half its suns, every other cell in it is a moon.
  4. Work through nearly full lines. With three or four blanks there are only a few ways to finish, and any cell that is the same in all of them is settled.
  5. Compare with full lines. If a line with two blanks could turn into a copy of another, place the opposite.

Stuck? Press Hint. It fills one cell that logic settles right now and explains why in one sentence. If a piece you placed does not match the solution, the hint points to it first. Best times for each size and level are saved in this browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is the binary puzzle free?

Yes. Play it free right on this page with no download or sign up, on computers, phones and tablets.

Is this the same as Takuzu or Binairo?

Yes. It uses the same three rules: no three in a row, equal counts in every line and no identical lines. ormgames shows suns and moons instead of 1 and 0, and you can switch to digits at any time.

Which one is 1, the sun or the moon?

The sun is 1 and the moon is 0. Turn numbers on or off with the 0/1 button or the N key. The setting is saved in this browser.

Can a puzzle have more than one solution?

No. Every puzzle has exactly one solution. While generating it, a solver finishes the grid step by step with pure logic and no guessing, and only puzzles that pass are kept.

How does the hint work?

Hint fills one cell that logic settles right now and tells you why, for example a pair, a gap or a full count. If a piece you placed is wrong, it points to that cell first. The number of hints you used shows in your result.

Are my times saved?

Your best time for every size from 6×6 to 12×12 and every level is saved in this browser.

What are the daily puzzle and challenge links?

The daily puzzle is one 10×10 Normal grid that everyone gets on the same day, and it changes at midnight Korea time. Once you solve it, the Daily button shows a check mark and your time. A challenge link is the link you send with Share result. A friend who opens it gets exactly the same grid and can try to beat your time. Nothing is sent to a server, and your records stay in this browser.
