How do you play the Sliding Puzzle?

Slide tiles into the empty space until the numbers run in order from 1 at the top left to the last one at the bottom right. The 4×4 version has 15 tiles, which is why it is called the 15 puzzle.

A tile can only move into the gap when it sits right next to it. The puzzle is solved when the gap ends up in the bottom right corner. Every shuffle is guaranteed to be solvable.

How do the tiles move?

What changes with the board size?

BoardTilesWhat to expect
3×38Great for a first try. The shortest solution is never longer than 31 moves.
4×415The classic 15 puzzle. Computer searches proved every position can be solved in 80 moves or fewer.
5×524A good step up once you know the method.
6×635The biggest board and a real marathon.

Tips for solving faster

  1. Finish the top row first. Once it is done, leave it alone and treat the rest as a smaller puzzle.
  2. Place the last two tiles of a row together. On 4×4, park 4 where 3 belongs with 3 right below it, then rotate both in.
  3. After two rows, solve the left column. The final 2×2 corner falls into place by cycling the gap around it.
  4. Slide whole lines. Moving several tiles in one tap saves time.

What is the daily puzzle?

Every day everyone gets the same shuffled 4×4 number board, and it changes at midnight Korea time. Since the board is identical, you can compare moves and time with friends.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sliding Puzzle free?

Yes. Play it free right on this page with no download or sign up, on a computer, phone or tablet.

Is this the 15 puzzle?

Yes. The 4×4 board with 15 tiles is the classic 15 puzzle. You can also pick 3×3, 5×5 and 6×6 boards and a picture mode.

Can I get a board that cannot be solved?

No. Each board is shuffled by making a long series of real random moves from the solved position, so every board can be solved. If tiles were simply dropped in at random, half of all layouts would be impossible, and those never appear here.

Why is the board with only 14 and 15 swapped impossible?

Every slide flips the parity of the out of order pairs together with the parity of the gap's row, so a layout with just two tiles swapped can never be reached. A prize offered for that exact puzzle around 1880 made it famous.

How are moves counted?

Each tile that moves counts as one. Sliding a line of three tiles counts as three moves.

What is picture mode?

Instead of numbers you get one of three clay pictures, Sunny Hills, Clay Cat or Happy Whale, cut into tiles. The Numbers button shows or hides small labels and the Peek button shows the finished picture for a moment.

Are my records saved?

Your fewest moves and fastest time for each board size are saved in this browser. When you finish the daily puzzle, the daily button shows a check mark and your result.
