How does this typing practice work?
Pick a mode and type the text in the middle of the screen exactly as shown. What you type appears right underneath, correct letters turn green and mistakes turn red. Your speed, accuracy and time are shown live at the top along with a progress bar.
The keyboard at the bottom bounces the next key you need and names the finger that should press it. Keys are tinted by finger, so keys of the same color belong to the same finger.
Which practice modes are there?
- Key drills: home row, top row, bottom row or all keys, 40 keys one at a time. A wrong key does not move you forward.
- Words: 20 common words. Press Space or Enter to go to the next one.
- Short sentences: 8 proverbs and pangrams such as "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."
- Long passages: a full passage over several lines, like the Gettysburg Address or the opening of Pride and Prejudice.
- 1 minute test: sentences keep coming for exactly 60 seconds, then you get your typing speed.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM is correctly typed characters per minute divided by 5, the standard definition of a word. Spaces count as characters, so 50 WPM means 250 correct characters in one minute.
| Measure | How it is counted |
|---|---|
| WPM | Correct characters per minute, spaces included, divided by 5 |
| Accuracy | Correct characters out of all characters checked |
| Korean KPM | Correct key presses per minute, counted letter part by letter part |
The Enter or Space you press to finish a line counts too. Accuracy is checked when you leave a line: missing and extra characters count as mistakes, but anything you fixed with Backspace before moving on counts as correct.
Can I practice Korean typing too?
Yes. Switch the title screen to Hangul (Dubeolsik), the standard Korean layout where the left hand types consonants and the right hand types vowels. Korean speed is measured in key presses per minute, so a syllable like 값 counts as 4 strokes.
Unfinished syllables are not marked red while you are still building them, and if your computer is in English mode the letters are converted into Hangul for you.
Tips to type faster
- Keep your eyes on the screen. It feels slow at first, but that is how your fingers learn the keys.
- Start from the home row. Rest your index fingers on the bumps on F and J and return there after every reach.
- Get accuracy first. Below 95% accuracy you lose more time fixing mistakes than you gain by rushing.
- Move up step by step. Key drills, then words, short sentences and long passages. A daily 1 minute test shows your progress on the graph.
Your best scores and recent graph are saved only in this browser. The long passages are public domain texts or written by ormgames.
