How does a tarot reading work?

You hold one question in mind, shuffle the deck, lay cards into set positions (a spread) and read their pictures and meanings. Above, choose a spread, press shuffle, then pick as many cards as the spread needs.

This reading uses the 78 cards of the Rider Waite system, the most widely used tarot deck. The artwork was drawn fresh for ormgames and the meanings follow traditional interpretations in plain language. It is free, needs no sign up and sends nothing to a server.

Which spread should I choose?

Choose Card of the Day for today, the three card spread for how one situation unfolds, Love Tarot for a relationship and Yes or No for a quick answer.

SpreadCardsPositions and how to read them
Card of the Day1Today's energy and advice. Drawing again on the same day gives the same card; it changes at midnight Korea time.
Past · Present · Future3What shaped the situation, what is happening now and where it is heading.
Love Tarot (You · Them · Relationship)3Your feelings, their feelings and what the bond needs, read with each card's love meaning.
Yes or No1Each card carries a yes, no or maybe answer. A reversed card softens it by one step.

What is the difference between upright and reversed?

A card that lands right side up is upright; one that lands upside down is reversed. Upright meanings flow openly, while reversed meanings suggest the energy is blocked, overdone or turned inward.

Reversed does not simply mean bad. Heavy cards such as The Tower or the Ten of Swords are often read as the worst having passed when reversed. In this reading, about 30% of cards come out reversed.

What are the Major and Minor Arcana?

The 78 cards split into 22 Major Arcana about life's big themes and 56 Minor Arcana about everyday matters.

Tips for a clearer reading

  1. Ask one clear question. "Will we grow closer this month?" reads better than "my love life".
  2. Do not redraw the same question. Sit with the first answer before asking again.
  3. Start with the picture. Notice how the scene on the card mirrors your situation before reaching for keywords.
  4. Read it as advice. Tarot is less a fixed future than a mirror for what you already feel.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tarot reading really free?

Yes. There is no sign up or payment; read right here on a phone, computer or tablet.

Does the card of the day change if I draw again?

No. The card of the day is set by the date and a value stored in this browser, so you get the same card all day. A new card arrives after midnight Korea time. The three card, love and yes or no spreads reshuffle every time.

Are the cards truly random?

Yes. The browser's cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues) shuffles all 78 cards, and each card has about a 30% chance of coming out reversed. Nothing is sent to a server.

Is a reversed card bad news?

Not necessarily. A reversed card suggests its energy is blocked, overdone or turned inward. For heavy cards, reversed can even mean the hardest part is over.

How is the yes or no answer decided?

Each card carries a traditional yes, no or maybe answer. When it comes out reversed, the answer softens by one step: yes becomes maybe, and maybe becomes no.

Should I be scared of the Death or Tower card?

No. Death is a card of change, one chapter closing so another can begin, and The Tower is about clearing away what was unstable so something sturdier can be built. That is why our Death card shows a sunrise and a white rose.

Which tarot deck does this use?

It follows the 78 card Rider Waite system (22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana), the most widely used deck. All card artwork was drawn fresh for ormgames.
