How do you play Gonggi?
Scatter five stones on the floor, then toss one up, grab stones from the floor before it lands, and catch the falling stone in the same hand. Ones takes one stone per toss, Twos takes two, Threes takes three then one, Fours takes all four at once, and the final Flip decides your score in "years".
In this game, tapping a stone tosses it in an arc. While it is up, tap or sweep floor stones to grab them, and when the stone comes down and the landing ring turns green, tap anywhere to catch. Tap too early and you drop it. Brush another stone while grabbing and you touched it, which ends your turn.
What are the rules from Ones to the Flip?
Each level sets how many stones you must grab per toss, and once the floor is empty you move to the next level. After Fours comes the Flip, where the stones you catch in your palm become years, and then you start again from Ones.
| Level | Tosses | Grab per toss | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ones | 4 | 1 stone | Pick a stone that sits close to another as the one you toss |
| Twos | 2 | 2 stones | Pair up the two closest stones and sweep them |
| Threes | 2 | 3 and 1, either order | Sweep the cluster of three first, or take the lone stone first |
| Fours | 1 | All 4 | The toss stays up longest, so one big sweep does it |
| Flip | 2 | Catch on the back of the hand, toss, catch in the palm | The closer your tap is to the moment they reach your hand, the more you keep |
There are five ways to fail: dropping the tossed stone, catching too early, touching another stone while grabbing, grabbing more than allowed, and catching with too few grabbed. Any of them passes the turn, and on your next turn you restart that level from its first toss. Years you already have never disappear.
How does the Flip work and how is it scored?
When all five stones are in your hand after Fours, toss all five, catch them on the back of your hand, toss those again and catch them in your palm. Whatever lands in your palm is your score in years. Keep all five and you earn 5 years.
| When you tap | Stones kept |
|---|---|
| Right as the stones reach hand height (within 0.05 s) | 5 |
| Slightly early or late (within 0.1 s) | 4 |
| Within 0.16 s | 3 |
| Within 0.22 s | 2 |
| Within 0.3 s | 1 |
| Later than that, or while the stones are still high | 0, and the turn passes |
If only three stones land on the back of your hand, the second catch can give at most 3 years. Both catches need good timing to reach 5. The ring on screen turning green marks the sweet spot.
What is the difference between Solo record and Vs computer?
Solo record counts how many years you stack before you use up three tries. Vs computer alternates turns, and the first to reach the goal wins. The goal can be 30, 50 or 100 years, with 100 as the default.
- Solo record: a failure costs one try and you continue from the start of that level. When the tries are gone, your years become your record, and your best is saved in this browser.
- Vs computer: a failure hands the turn to the computer, and its failure hands it back. Each side resumes from the level it failed, so years stay. A successful Flip lets you keep going into the next round.
- Computer levels: Easy touches stones often and flips clumsily, Normal plays like a decent human, Hard rarely slips and often keeps 4 or 5 on the Flip.
Why does it keep saying I touched another stone?
Because you tapped a spot shifted toward a neighboring stone instead of the center of the stone you wanted. If the tap is closer than one stone diameter to another stone, your finger counts as having brushed it.
Stones never land overlapping when scattered, so tapping dead center is always safe. When two stones sit close together, lift one of them as the stone you toss. That is exactly why real players choose their tossing stone carefully. From Twos on, close pairs are actually easier, since you sweep them together.
Tips for stacking more years
- Toss the crowded stone first. In Ones you must grab one at a time, so lifting the stone nearest to another leaves four easy centers to hit.
- Grab on the way up, catch on the way down. Finish grabbing while the stone rises, then watch only for the ring to turn green. Tapping before green is an early catch.
- In Threes, take three first. Sweeping the cluster and then calmly grabbing the last one is safer than the other way around.
- Drag in Fours. The toss stays up the longest, so sweep all four with one finger motion rather than four taps.
- Flip by rhythm. The time from the toss sound to the stones reaching your hand is always the same. Learn the beat and 5 years becomes routine.
Controls
- Touch or mouse: with an empty hand, tap a floor stone to toss it. While it is up, tap a floor stone to grab it, or press and drag to grab every stone you pass over. Tap empty floor to toss from your hand or to catch the falling stone. In the Flip you only tap.
- Keyboard: ←→ selects a floor stone (shown with a dotted ring), ↓ or P grabs it, Space, Enter or ↑ tosses or catches. Space on the title or result screen starts right away.
