Matching games run on one simple rule, group the same things and clear them, and still keep you playing for ages. The rush of a big chain is what it is all about.
Swap animals to make three in a row, link tiles in Shisen-Sho, clear stacked Mahjong solitaire tiles, go big in Same Game, pop Chain Shot marbles, make 10 in the Apple Game or merge cookies. Each matches in its own way.

Shisen-ShoPick two matching tiles and clear them if an empty path with at most two turns connects them. The border around the board counts as a path, and levels run from 60 tiles to 144.
Animal Match 3Swap an animal with a neighbor to line up three or more of a kind, and the animals that fall in can set off chains. Four in a row makes a line bomb, five makes a rainbow, and you can play the 1 minute rush or 30 moves.
SameGameClear any group of two or more touching blocks of one color, and the blocks above fall to form new groups. Clearing n at once scores (n-2)² points, so big groups pay off, and an empty board adds 1000.
Mahjong MatchPick two matching free tiles, ones with nothing on top and an open left or right side, to clear them. There are 144 tiles in five layouts such as Pyramid and Turtle, and any flower pairs with any flower, any season with any season.
Marble ChainShoot marbles into the rolling chain to pop three or more of a color, and if the colors either side of the gap match, the chain pulls together for another pop. Ten tracks come in turn, with Rewind, Slow and Bomb marbles mixed in.
Apple GameDrag a box around apples whose numbers add up to exactly 10 and they vanish together. Your score is how many of the 170 apples you clear in two minutes, and a box can reach across empty gaps.
Cookie MergeDrop cookies so matching ones touch and merge into the next size up, allowing for how they roll. There are 10 sizes up to the cookie cake, and you can pour milk three times a game to shake stuck cookies loose.
Bubble ShooterShoot bubbles to join three or more of one color, and anything cut off from the ceiling drops whatever its color. Bank shots off the walls reach behind other bubbles, and dropped bubbles score double.
Memory MatchFlip two cards at a time and keep them when the animals or fruits match. The 18 pictures look like clay figures, and you can also take turns with a friend or play the computer.
Water SortPour only onto a matching top color or into an empty tube, gathering colors until every tube holds four of one. There are 300 levels growing from 3 colors to 12, each one checked by a solver.
Block PuzzleFit each of the three blocks into the gaps exactly as it comes, with no rotating, and any full row or column of 8 clears. Lines that fill together clear together, and the score grows with the square of the lines cleared.
Jigsaw PuzzleMatch the tabs and blanks on each piece to find its neighbors and rebuild the picture. Choose one of 13 pictures and 12 to 150 pieces, and matching neighbors snap together even off the board.
Color FloodEach color you pick repaints your area and absorbs the touching cells of that color, until the whole board is one color. Choose from three board sizes and 4, 6 or 8 colors, or play a two player land grab from opposite corners.

It depends on the game. Most let you play calmly, and a few like the Apple Game are timed score attacks.
Mahjong solitaire only deals solvable layouts, and Shisen-Sho shuffles automatically when you are stuck.
